Manga
As we know, people of all ages read manga in Japan. More importantly, manga has become a key component of youth life.
Comiket, also known as Comic Market, which is the world's largest doujinshi (self published, adapted manga by comic fanatics) fair held twice a year in Tokyo, attracted over 560,000 attendees in 2009 according to Wikipedia. Apart from that, there are all kinds of manga magazines.
Granted that Americans do have their own comic books and many famous comic heroes, but obviously America is no match on quantity.
